Hello and happy Friday!
In the mayhem of my last couple of weeks I missed a major milestone for Really Good Vintage: our 100th newsletter! How did this all get begin?
Well, when I started this in March of 2022, the company I worked for had shuttered, I got some bad health news, and I was at a loss as to how to put one foot in front of the other. So for a couple weeks I kind of just laid on the couch and surfed eBay. I couldn’t be bothered to leave my apartment and in my melancholy I found a really cute short suit for $10, and a slinky Armani button down for $8, and a sheer silk dress for $22. And I kept finding things, more often than not not in my size, but I knew they needed to be seen, bought, and loved. So the seed for how to get them seen was planted until it eventually blossomed on Substack.
This newsletter gave me a sense of purpose - a much-needed creative outlet that got me off the couch and focused enough to start tackling all the other hurdles in my life, too. I started selling vintage full-time, with big online drops here and here and a lot of little pop-ups here and there, with some permanent stuff at Club Vintage (still!). Everything kind of snowballed from there and the big news of this year was when I bid adieu to New York and returned to Kentucky where I am still scheming to open my own store.
All this to say, I’m so grateful for this space and most importantly, for you. I would still find ways to hunt and style vintage if this newsletter didn’t exist but it’s brought so much good into my life! This community is so lovely and so fucking psyched about vintage and it’s so invigorating!
So to celebrate 100+ posts (and we crossed the bridge of 1,000 subscribers a while ago, too!!), I figured we should take a walk down memory lane! Below are some of mine and your favorite posts over the last 100 newsletters. Some of these were for the paid tier (marked with an asterisk) but I’ve unlocked them for the weekend. Read ‘em while you can or even better…
Anyhow, I’ll quit yappin’ so you can get to shopping!
In no particular order…Our Favorite Posts from RGV!
1. How to Shop Vintage Online* - If you’re new (or old!) to online vintage sourcing, I share my tips and tricks of the trade for eBay, Etsy, Poshmark, and The Real Real. This is not the end-all, be-all of guides, but it will definitely help you find your footing and get more comfortable searching for yourself!
2. Meg Ryan’s Fall Fashion Bonanza* - This one was so fun! This kind of a post takes me a loooong time so it’s been a loooong time since I repeated it. But! If you have other movie stars/movies you would like to see styled, please drop it in the comments!
3. This is Halloween! - Not really the best for style but I did like the writing for this one and it did actually help me put together a last-minute Halloween costume (hot dog fingers).
4. Bode-inspired vintage edit - This was definitely a fan favorite, so much so that there’s a part two here! I honestly could put together another three edits of this because Bode is steeped in vintage so it’s a deep deep well.
5. Exploring Color Theory with Silk Separates - This one really got my brain churning. I’m usually a neutrals gal, but I’m never opposed to bold strokes of color. And in online sourcing, you’ll find there are so many incredible silk pieces at such affordable prices that I couldn’t not play around with them all.
6. *NOT* not a gift guide pt. 2…* - Occasionally there are home goods! And occasionally there are a LOT of home goods! Loved putting this together (here’s part one*) and it inspired the next post, too.
7. If You Could Wear Your Interiors Style - Inspired by all the home goods, I created outfits based on room styles/colors/textures. Such a fun challenge that I’ll probably try and put another one of these together soon!
8. One Vest, Four Ways - Both a personal and fan favorite! I didn’t mean for this to be a one-off but it has been so far. I would love to do another so please drop in the comments what you’d most like to see modeled on this hot bod.
9. The In-Betweeners - A pretty classic edition of RGV and one that could be of use now because the weather is terrifyingly weird (I’m still sad I didn’t buy that taupe tube top).
10. Plain Sweatshirts Are Never Really Plain* - Love a deep dive on a single piece. A plain sweatshirt is a wardrobe staple for me and I didn’t stop there - I have deep dives on striped oxfords* and sheer bottoms*, too! Some styled outfits + lots of options to shop? Big fan.
11. One Sheer Tunic, Five Ways - In the same vein of loving a deep dive, I also love showing the versatility of a piece. Especially a piece as confounding as a sheer tunic or a cream, open-side tunic (I do love a tunic). I’ve also gone all-in before and built an entire spring capsule wardrobe* (I should do one of these for fall, too, eh?). These really help me look more closely at my own closet and how to change my perspective on pieces I feel too comfortable with.
As always, thank you for being here!! It was so nice revisiting all the old posts and hopefully some of these have re-inspired you as they have me! We’re back to our usual posting schedule next week, so have a great weekend and I’ll see you Tuesday!
xx Maggie
