Striped oxfords for all your vintage J.Crew dreams
+ I never say this but: everyone should have one.
Hi and happy Tuesday!
Outside of my love for neutrals and silks, I gotta say there’s an evergreen appeal to certain pieces of Americana style that speak to me. Case in point: the striped oxford. Usually these come in the form of an even, midsize stripe, but give me a cabana stripe, a railroad stripe, a pinstripe, a western stripe - I don’t care one bit as long as it’s blue, white, and oversized. And that’s the key! To really capture the carefree, ‘just threw this on’ vibe, it needs to fit oversized.
So, to show the many ways this piece can be worn, I’ve styled three looks with progressively more print mixing and three different pairs of Ann Marino heels. Then, a round-up of some other striped shirt options so you can find your own and get to lounging in that yacht you’ve got just wasting away at the docks (lol). I’ll wear mine as I grill this summer, probably when I clean my house, and definitely when I wear tiny shorts.
Happy shopping!
I have definitely styled something similar to this in the last year, but it’s hard to not come back to this when 1. the sum of the parts is excellent and 2. the individual pieces can be reworn a thousand different ways. This is a great brunch/farmer’s market day look, and you must obviously roll the sleeves of the shirt and keep it unbuttoned to get that French cobblestone-wandering energy that I’m trying to exude here. Also, no your eyes do not deceive you, those kitten heels are currently sitting at $1 so hop to it!
I’ve worn a version of this look before, and let me tell you the easiest way to print mix a stripe is with another stripe. They don’t have to match colors like above, but I like the cohesiveness of this version. This one you want to tuck all the way in for a 90s vibe and I’ll let you decide if you want to cuff the shirt, the pants, or both. To subtly add more prints keep them neutral with a ponyhair spotted slide and a striped woven tote. Honestly you could wear this for another brunch/farmer’s market look (is that how I want to spend my weekends? Yes. Is it how I actually spend my weekends? Nope! But we’ll see what the summer brings).
Finally, the most vibrant version of print mixing of the three! As you saw last week, I have a penchant for red and this is a nice way to marry it with blue without looking patriotic. Love the drape of these pants which requires the shirt to be tied at the waist this time so you can see the full length of your legs, thus lengthening your silhouette. However, if silhouette doesn’t matter to you but slouchy coolness does, leave the shirt hanging untucked but definitely roll up the sleeves. Then, add some fun red strappy sandals (for which I would get a pedicure in the same bold red) and then keep it elevated but easy with this Bottega-esque woven bag. If you did wear this to the farmer’s market, you’d be the fanciest shopper there!
