The tea length obsession continues
Here are some full 'fits to sway you to my new favorite skirt
Hi and happy Tuesday!
As I mentioned Saturday, I had so much fun sourcing and styling tea length dresses that today is a bonus newsletter with some tea length skirts. In the same vein styling the dresses, I have a very specific vision for how I would wear my tea length skirts: prep meets classic chic; J. Crew meets Armani. For summer I want to embody the carefree lifestyle of a moneyed Maine resident who hangs out on sailboats and just throws together sumptuous meals, a gal who’s never had jet lag or was born knowing how to pronounce “Miuccia.” Basically, I’m realizing I’d just like to be rich. And if we can’t be rich then we can sure as hell look the part! If we build it, wealth will come, no? Some inspo:
I love the idea of a tea length skirt tucked under and billowing from an oversized sweater or button down, a tunic bustier worn over the waist band of a skirt to give the effect of a drop waist, a blousy vest that matches the ease of your breezy skirt. Basically, I want these looks to feel effortless and actually be effortless. They don’t need much in the way of styling and we want to keep things simple! As I said Saturday, in my stylist’s eye I see these looks with a middle part, hair pulled back low. Minimal accessories and jewelry, and flat footwear. We’re going for everyday comfort but elevated and insouciant.
Below I have put together one ‘Vintage Copycat’ that has the vibes I’m aiming for, and then six styled looks. I’m keeping my comments as brief and simple as the outfits themselves.
And don’t forget this Friday we’re chatting with none other than Harling Ross Anton of Gumshoe!
Happy shopping xx
I’m forever seeking ways to wear little while still maintaining some coverage. A long net skirt with an oversized button down is exactly it. Your legs are covered but tantalizingly so, and you have the cool relaxed feel of a men’s button down on top, downplaying the inherent sexiness of the skirt. Add any sandals, loafers, brogues, a red lip, and a pair of black sunglasses and you’re set.
This is the ultimate vibe for me, which is light linens in different lengths. Layering a minidress over a linen pencil skirt gives the same feel of a drop waist dress (but this is more forgiving) and when paired with barely-there sandals and boldly-there hoops, you have a cool, chic look for nearly any summer fête.
This Mara Hoffman skirt [RIP brand ;( ] has such a cool waist tie that lies easily over this bustier. Any tank would do, but I’m clearly in a tube top mood and this one paired with some cute little ballet flats and again, some bold earrings, are an unbeatable combo. Special without being gimmicky.
This is the outfit you wear when you’re on vacation near a coast. You’re shopping markets, you’re sipping mid-day aperitifs, you’re taking a dip in the sea. And you look easy and breezy doin’ it all.
Love the drop waist jersey weight of this skirt. Looks great with a graphic crop sweater or an oversized button down or a slouchy tunic vest. Add some prep in your step with a pert little backpack and woven leather loafers!
What is it about summer that makes me want to dress like I’m afield? This would not remotely look out of place amongst some wildflowers. But note the sharp cut of the top with the texture of the skirt, the *raffia* buckle on the sandals, and the jaunty swing of a macrame bag.
She’s a city girl for sure, working in a chic shop in the Lower East Side. Everything is simple but sleek and nothing wastes your time. Perfect linen top with perfect celadon color and asymmetric belt, perfect satin flats, and perfect oblong earrings.
Let me know if you buy anything and even better - tag me! Love to see these things get a new lease on life. Thanks as always for being here and I’ll see you on Friday!
xx Maggie
All of these outfits are so good! I feel like the breezy sophistication of Armani is often overlooked.
Consider me convinced of the tea length -- never knew the name of this length of skirt/dress before
