Happy Friday, party people!
Here we are with another newsletter filled to the gills with really good vintage. I actually had to open a new Ebay account for all the things I’ve saved, which makes three accounts in total. Why they only limit your saved items to 400 is beyond me as it never feels like enough and to which you’re probably slack-jawed at the thought of having nearly 1,200 saved Ebay items (and that’s just one platform!). But, like George, when I sit down to style and write these newsletters, it’s all about my mood. Some things hit one week and don’t for another two months!
Sometimes I want “morning mist” and sometimes I want “evening fervor” - I can’t predict it! All this to say we’ve got a pretty spot-on ‘Vintage Copycat’; we’ve got four styled looks; and we’ve got twelve bonus things for ‘Things I Like.’
Happy shopping! Subscribe and/or upgrade here, too, if you haven’t yet!
NYFW has kicked off and one show that never disappoints for glamour is Michael Kors. Lewis’s Mag has a great breakdown here and I would suggest all that he writes as required reading if you want to follow along with all the shows for historical context and thoughtful critique! One look from MK’s latest show really stood out to me, though, because - not to toot my own horn loud enough it could be heard in space even though sound can’t travel in a vacuum!! - I basically found the exact pre-replica last December and first highlighted it here with other ‘car wash’ hem dresses (and you know how I feel about that particular detail). I indeed found two of the same dress by the ultimate vintage party designer, Niteline, and while one has since sold, the other is still available! If I were a betting woman, the Michael Kors version will hover around the one grand mark, so do yourself, your closet, and the environment a favor and buy the original for $125!
I’ve been sitting on this tube top for a while, unsure how I wanted to style it because the length and hip detail made it slightly tricky. But I love a challenge, and when I came across this drop waist pleated knit skirt, this tube top flashed in my mind and I knew these two had to be together. Worn together they look like a mixed-knit dress but then you benefit from the versatility of wearing them as separates innumerable ways! I wanted to try something other than my usual brutalist silver or brushed gold to set off the look and immediately thought the depth and grounding color of malachite would do the trick perfectly. Then add some simple and spicy minimal Armani strappy heels and you’re good to go!
More long tops layered over bottoms! This fun embroidered tunic could work as a minidress depending on your height, but for now we’re doing something a little more unexpected and adding an extremely flared pair of pants. The silhouette mimics late 60s hippiedom (as does the literal late 60s/early 70s tunic), but the accessories and fabrication bring it steadfastly into the present. Love the weight of these wedges and handle of the bag. Would wear this with some small gold hoops and a gold coin necklace!
I remember reading somewhere that costume designer Edith Head, when designing looks for the men in White Christmas, really loved keeping clean lines and didn’t want garish socks to jar what should be a visual fluidity when the men were dancing. So, she custom-made pants, socks, and shoes that were all the same color (as you can see here!). I was a kid when I heard that fact but sometimes it will show up in how I want to style something, such as with the taupe pants + the taupe suede flats here. It’s small, but it’s a little romantic, I think! And any chance to mimic Edith Head is aces in my book. So obviously that’s where this started. Then add a fun literary tee and fab cropped blazer in navy, because you need the contrast!
Unlike the the pant/show combo above, the matching accessories here were an accident! I found the belt and then remember I had an orange-y brown boot saved somewhere and lo and behold, they’re both faux croc. Lean in! They’re just bolstering the best knit polo in the biz and some stalwart pinstripe trousers! A very October look but could easily become some closet heroes for you.
1. Halston broad collar trench, $89. Love the width for this whole thing: the collar, the sleeve, the body.
2. Deveaux single strap tank, $62. The back of this is so sexy! Great in combo with any pant or jacket in this collage.
3. White tank dress, $15. Tried and true and a forever favorite. Would that this were my size!
4. Saville red skirt suit, $20. Such a steal! The jacket has a great oversized cut (double breasted jackets are usually best for that silhouette) PLUS a fab midiskirt for twirling through spring!
5. RL faux fur trim strapless dress, $45. Great detail without overwhelming or becoming hokey.
6. Anne Klein sheer flats, $40. Not quite the same as these but damn close! Had to share them.
7. Cream silk shacket, $33. Closet staple!
8. Banana Republic black leather blazer, $40. Ditto! ^^
9. Criscione fringe blazer, $85. Not a staple but super fun! A precursor to this dreamy Max Mara that I want to someday own.
10. Gray plaid pant set, $67. Everything about this is a yes.
11. DKNY linen culotte jumpsuit, $42. I’m feeling spring-y!
12. Kenzo cream wide wale pants, $51. Love a cream cord but especially love a wide wale cream cord.
With that, have a great weekend, subscribe or upgrade if you haven’t, and thank you as always for being here! xx Maggie
