Taupe. Like the hit single, “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman,” the color taupe is best described by what it’s not: it isn’t tan, nor grey, nor brown, nor beige, nor mauve, nor olive, nor mushroom. Some have attempted to rebrand it “greige” which, while technically correct, tries to obfuscate the beautiful complexity that is more than just two colors blended together. No, the taupe rainbow can run from pale and sandy to dark and brooding, and each shade in between is as beautiful as the last.
It was brought to prominence in the late 80s and ran well into the 90s thanks to designers like Armani (its biggest proponent), Donna Karan, Anne Klein, Calvin Klein, Hermès, the occasional Miu Miu, and “mall” brands like Jones New York, The Limited, and Liz Claiborne. And if I have anything to do with it, its popularity will surge again this day in the hearts and minds of RGV subscribers and carry well into the future!
While I’m busy fomenting a taupe revolution, let’s take a look at some inspo pics…
See how good? What’s even better is now you can shop taupe til you drop! Not to toot my own horn or anything but the collage below does a bang-up job of hitting almost every shade and every fabrication that could possibly be found.
Happy shopping!
