Sample Platter 24: Crisscross, one shoulder, and floral frocks
It's a dress world, I'm just sweating through it.
Hi and happy Friday!
Apologies for my delay in publication, I was in Colorado for nearly a week for some friends’ wedding and then as soon as I got home had a summer photoshoot for the shop! Can’t wait for you all to see the steamy magic we made!
Speaking of steamy, while Colorado was 99° and gorgeous, Kentucky at 96° feels like you are literally swimming through the streets. It is so humid here, and I’m sure all my other southerners can empathize. I don’t love it. I don’t do well in summer humidity. I bloat and swell and sweat and my hair loses all curl. Blech.
The only thing I can bear to think of wearing is dresses. Anything that moves and breathes and feels like I’m wearing not much of anything. This was clearly in mind when I was putting this Sample Platter together, so please enjoy. There’s only a couple statement pieces, the rest are very daily, wearable pieces that may help you, too, suffer a little less through Satan’s summer.
All that said - happy shopping!

1. Striped dress & jacket set, $49. The epitome of summer.
2. Bellina red ric rac tunic, $75. How precious is this? I would wear it over the petticoat skirt in #30 with some lace-up sandals.
3. Prada beige nylon bag, $90. Since opening a store I’ve been bag-obsessed. I’m constantly hauling and constantly looking for a cool bag that can withstand all the hauling.
4. Sequin zodiac dress, $135. My very first Sample Platter I shared the tank version of this! Was psyched to find the dress iteration!
5. Bias one shoulder ruffle dress, $60. Summer wedding guest dress sorted (just add #21).
6. Ungaro gold gown, $68. Speaking of nuptials, I’ve been thinking I might wear a gold or sequin minidress for my reception. Disco-inspired is what I’m going for and I don’t think anything could hit the mark better than this beauty (hemmed, of course)!
7. J Peterman silk 30s-style gown, $60. I found a couple of these styles for my store and they’re forever favorites for me and my customers. The drape, the light fabric, the romance!
8. Brown polka dot tank set, $39. Adorable. Now with sandals and in the fall with a long leather blazer and loafers.
9. Ferragamo woven sandals, $45. There’s no way these will last the day.
10. Red & white floral halter bias dress, $30. See: my reasoning for #7.
11. Yellow linen button-front skirt, $55. Summer is the easiest time for me to include color into my wardrobe. I’d wear this with just a white tee or a white tank and a blue striped oxford open on top.
12. Oatmeal linen sundress, $23. It’s so humid in Kentucky, the less you wear, the better.
13. Lily of France black lace-up tank, $29. Cute! With #27 or #30 or anything in your closet.
14. Desigual mesh tank, $20. Love the light mesh, straight neckline, and lettuce hem.
15. Dries van Noten yellow sunglasses, $75. To be worn with #11 obviously.
16. Grecian off the shoulder dress, $65. A great vacation dress, no matter the destination.
17. Ellen Tracy linen wrap criss cross dress, $165. I know this seems like a lot but old Ellen Tracy pieces are high-end designer levels of well-made. I have a vest dress version of this that I’ve never been able to fit in but I also can’t let go because it is DIVINE.
18. Moda Intl red button-side cross back dress, $55. I clearly have criss cross backs on the brain and this one’s fire engine red with the option to show as much as thigh as you like!
19. Navy linen button-side dress, $48. The third iteration of my clear favorite summer dress style. This time in navy linen with no cross back but with the sides up the buttons. Not for nothing, all three of these would be great wedding guest dresses.
20. Oatmeal linen mini shirtdress, $36. See: my reasoning for #12.
21. Ferragamo scallop mules, $40. What a deal! And a size 10!
22. Red linen floral applique shirt, $24. Not only is this a bold, beautiful red but the floral appliques make me want to update some shirts I’ve not been wearing.
23. Tibi rounded red top, $65. Obviously this neckline is incredible. Would go full 00s vibe and pair with the Jil Sander pants in #27.
24. Virgo sweatshirt, $60. Fun!
25. Laura Ashley black knit racerback dress, $51. I know this doesn’t look like much but click this link! The weight of this dress will literally clingggg to your body and needs your hot bod to make it what it was always destined to be.
26. Cropped oatmeal linen vest, $30. Easy throw on summer top!
27. Jil Sander nylon biege pants, $59. Found these moments after I found the Prada bag, so clearly it’s a sign that beige nylon is BACK, baby! (was it ever here? was it ever gone? i dunno.)
28. Smocked black minidress, $75. SO 80s and SO fun.
29. Walter Kristensen linen dress, $45. This shoulder detail is so special.
30. Laura Ashley white petticoat skirt, $69. Summery classic!
Thanks as always for being here and I’ll see you next Wednesday! xx Maggie
