Recreating five Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy looks

Hi and happy…Tuesday?

We’re still getting back to the usual schedule ‘round these parts but as ever, I so appreciate your patience - I’ll always make sure you get your deserved newsletters! 1. Because you are absolutely owed them and 2. Because I can’t help but find tons of vintage each week that I have to share or I’ll burst. Anyhow! About a month ago the New York Times published an article about Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and her enduring style (it seems I’ve been inspired by magazine articles lately!). Though I’ve long been a card-carrying member of Minimalism™, Carolyn’s style never quite wowed me until recently. Her style was thoughtful, simple, and always toeing the line between prep and minimalism; all aspects of her fashion that I knew but didn’t ever quite get. I guess the benefit of wisdom and aging? Wanting to strip back my own wardrobe to only the essentials? Regardless, I’ve found five outfits that spoke to me and have recreated them with vintage. Each outfit only entails a few pieces (hence, minimalism), but they’re effective, timeless, and you probably have most of them in your closet already - win win win!

ps I found so many good pieces recreating these looks that Friday’s newsletter will be a big round-up of minimal pieces!

Happy shopping!

Black blazer jacket, $62 // Baum und Pferdgarten ribbed knit dress, $95 // Black oval sunglasses, $15 // Small leather handbag, $8 // Stuart Weitzman suede sock boots, $106

I found a few grey ribbed separates (because I think that’s what she’s wearing) but none of them matched exactly and this button-front ribbed dress is a great and modern facsimile of both the cut and color. The true MVP in my book, though, is the long blazer. I swear to you, throw one on over a tshirt and sweatpants and you look put together. They’re not as expected as a classic blazer and have a kind of effortless grace to them that makes them easy to dress up or down. Plus they’re a great transitional-weight piece so you don’t have to lean so hard on your denim or chore or leather jacket. To wrap it all up, the details are pure 90s: oblong sunglasses, sock boots, and a thick black headband - you already own all of these, don’t you?
