The vintage Marimekko collector and avid cook curates her perfect summer day
Hi and happy Friday!
This week’s guest editor is
of Sunday Sauce! I’ve been a long-time reader and fan of Maria since her Refinery29 days all the way up to her current Betches directorship. Through it all she’s been an ardent vintage collector, an envy-inducing cook, and has the best curls this side of the Mississippi. Dive in to her summer garden-inspired curation! From Maria: If I close my eyes and imagine my perfect summer day it’s this: spending the morning in the garden with my hands in dirt, the afternoon in the kitchen making something delicious from my harvest, and the evening out on the lawn with a glass of wine and bare feet. I’m not that woman *quite* yet in practice, but I’ve been manifesting her in my wardrobe. I like the idea of comfortable clothing you can wear around the house that looks effortless and breezy should a friend drop by. Bliss!

Marimekko Fujiwo Ishimoto Puff Sleeved Maxi Dress: Vintage Marimekko is still easy to come by in the wild, and it’s worth the price. Their dresses especially are lightweight and breezy, and can be worn to basically anything.
Old Westbury Gardens Necklace: You can never go wrong with a novelty necklace. I love the little seed packet charms on this one.
Old Bybee Antique Pottery Pitcher: Nothing sweeter than a speckled ceramic pitcher. I use mine for iced tea and for displaying floppy tulips.
Eileen West Cotton Nightgown: I recently purged all of my old pajamas in favor of gauzy nightgowns. They’re absolutely the most comfortable things in the world to sleep in and you can get them pre-owned on the cheap.
Huaraches: I buy a new pair of huaraches around Memorial Day every summer and then wear them so often, they’re falling off my feet by Labor Day.
Woven Straw Hat: My number one rule: Never leave the house without a hat in the summer. Love this woven one for the garden.
Carhartt Overalls: Trust me, these look better with a little dirt worn into the knees.
LL Bean Pink Floral Blouse: I love wearing my blouses oversized — this one would look amazing with a white maxi skirt or tucked into some overalls.
French Wire Basket: I’m usually a wicker basket girlie, but when I saw this wire number, I audibly gasped. I have visions of it spilling over with tomatoes, lettuce, parsley, and peppers.
Milano Italian White Linen Vintage Blouse: A classic white tee, but with a dreamy, summery twist.
Bandana: I have an entire collection of bandanas — they’re an accessorizing Swiss Army Knife. This one would go with pretty much everything in my closet.
J-Crew Side-Slit Maxi Skirt: Does anything say summer more than an eyelet maxi skirt? So versatile and sweet.
French Antique Majolica Plate: I’m a sucker for a one-of-a-kind vintage plate or platter, but I get good use out of them — they’re on the table for any and every dinner party I throw.
Garnet Hill Linen Chambray Pants: I practically live in elastic-waist linen pants between May and August. The chambray color of these is perfect for summer.
Thanks so much again, Maria and thanks to you all for being here! Have a great weekend xx Maggie
